ARIEL DANCE THEATRE Presents SHIFT SWITCH GO
Directed and Choreographed by Andrea Ariel
Sound Design by K. Eliot Haynes
Production Management by Natalie George
Featuring the talents of Jude Hickey, Adriene Mishler, Jacob Trussell, Jennifer McGowan, Stephanie Chavez, Amy Myers Martin, Scott Roskilly, Morgan Taylor, and Mackenzie Taylor
SHIFT SWITCH GO is a 55-minute excursion of DANCE, STORY and SONG about PEOPLE, how we MEET and CHANGE through CHANCE and CIRCUMSTANCE. Created in collaboration with a nine-member ensemble of dancers and actors, Director/Choreographer, Andrea Ariel crafts visually engaging, complex patterns of dance and physical theater inspired by our cyclic routines, using chance and circumstance to create the intersections that provoke our meetings, the conversations we have, and the stories we share.
Eliot Haynes’s evocative sound score shifts the environment like “channel-changing,” moving from lively percussion pieces, to ambient electronics, to field recordings from around the world. The outdoor environment becomes the stage where life and art merge, and layers of our thoughts and conversations emerge through story and song.
In the development of SHIFT SWIFT GO our conversations were infused with asking three questions of ourselves and through outreach to others: What is the first thing that comes to mind when you think of water? What do you most desire? What are you most willing to give up/live without as a consumer? What is the most important issue that concerns you about the environment? Audiences will be invited to add their responses on written notes that will be used in the performance.
SHIFT SWITH GO is a jumping point… an experiment. And your participation is part of it. It cannot happen without you. Come travel into the sunset with us.
Produced in Association with Diverse Arts and funded in part by individual contributors, the City of Austin through the Cultural Arts Division, a grant from the Texas Commission on the Arts and an award from the National Endowment for the Arts, which believes that a great nation deserves great art.
